Big Tunes w/ Undercover

Alrighty, some huuuge tunes starting to drop again - reggae is vibing on the vintage right now. Tarrus has dropped an amazing album teaming up with Dean Fraser as they mix big solid riddims with sweet lovers licks - all killer, no filler on that one - much in the same vein as the recent Shaggy and Bitty albums. Randy Valentine is one of my favorite vocalists right now and he's dropped some maad vintage styles to follow up on his No1 Station hit on Bring Back the Love. Addis Pablo is another youth hitting his straps and releasing his debut full length In My Fathers House - a nod towards his pa. A few solid melodic dub sonic booms in there. The latest crop of Roots Riddims drop including Jahdan, Pressure and Ziggi on Jah Warriah Riddim, Tarrus, Jah Cure and Christopher on Zion Train Riddim, Kabaka, Chronixx and Wayne Marshall on Cultivator Riddim and Jah Sun, Skarra Mucci and Lutan Fyah on Swing Easy Riddim. Going Home Riddim in a reload with Capleton and Pressure ramping things up while Rough Road gets a big combination style with Kabaka, Chronixx and Dre Island mashing that shit down. We finish up with some token dancehall with a killer version from Romain Virgo. Part 1 /  Part 2

A Blend of Mashups w/ Undercover

I was thinking the other day how I ain't heard a good mash-up in a while. Over our ways it was all the rage and the staple of any good DJ was the party starting reggae 7" bootlegs from the likes of Jstar, Heatwave, Interstate and Primetime. But they soon became few and far between (the good ones anyway), I guess they just got left behind as reggae from JA turned on and dancehall became the go-to party music. Jump forward 3-4 years and we still have vocals from Rihanna and MIA, we still have The Heatwave, Soulforce and Jstar, but the rocksteady and reggae riddims have been left behind and the dial has just been turned up a fair few notches with bangin' dancehall riddims straight inna daggering Major Lazer vibe. Well and truly Mashed Up! For old times sake, I've included some of my all time favourite blends in this mix - Tupac and Alton will never get old ya' hear! Mash it up!

Reggae Got Soul w/ Undercover

As the dawn of the 60s approached, Jamaica was awash with the sweet soulful sounds of Motown. Harmony groups such as the The Uniques, The Heptones, The Paragons, The Techniques and The Wailers just took the latest soul and r&b hits from Shirley and Lee, Smokey Robinson, The Impressions, Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone and gave them the Jamaican Rocksteady do-over - it was the pop hit of the day - the original reggae mash-up! What resulted was reggae's enduring love affair (excuse the pun) with soul and in my opinion, some of the greatest music on earth. Big Tunes w/ Undercover

Fresh new business rolling in this month! Starting the fyah with a single from Curtis Lynch's new Gregory Remixed project, new comer Jah 9 is on some next level shit, showing us why she's making huge vibes in Jamaica at the moment. The huge Sellassie Souljah by the biggest new names in the biz right now is just massive. It might be old but I just stumbled across the Major Lazer and Junior Blender mix of the Hot Chip. Riddim wise this month we have some biggies! Push Comes to Shove, originally recorded in 1992 with the like of Tanto Metro and Devonte gets additional vocals from Delly Ranx,  Vybz Kartel and crew. Queen Majesty, is actually His Imperial Majesty riddim and is killer, my favourite off that is the Anthony Redrose lick, so big! Old Timer riddim, is a nice one drop riddim and has an empowering Women only lineup, dope stuff on there. On the euro tip we have Digital Rules riddim, a scorching digi riddim featuring my favourite cut from staltwart Sammy Gold. Next we have Dirty Dubsters and Mystro heating things up before the maaad new lick of a well known tune from none other than Ninjaman!!! This could be the biggest tune in this set!!!! Dancehall riddims up next with the 87 Riddim, a dope Tempo relick from the Delly Ranx camp, Cham drops a dope tune from the Mad House camp and we finish tings off Go Hard off Junior Gong's Set Up Shop Vol 1 and a few of my favourite dancehall riddims at the moment, Ashphalt and Fire riddims! Boom!

Israel Starr & Iron Will - Warlord

Check this fresh master of a local New Zealand boy's Israel Starr and Iron Will's heavy dub scorcher! These boys have mad underground talent and having DJ'd many times while Israel is on the mic - I can attest. He comes to the dance all styles, packing a vocal range over anything from lovers, ragga, roots and dancehall! Iron Will on the other hand is a dope producer releasing tracks from Silva MC, Jah Red Lion and of course his roots band The Solomonix, bringing an amazing authentic roots sound.

The Roots of Reggae / Southern Melting Pot w/ Undercover

With the Kingston soundsystems of the 50s playing US r&b, soul and blues it was only natural the vibe would rub off on the local musicians - they where even toasting over it in the early 50s. Early ska producers where heavily influenced by the sounds of Fats Domino, Shirley and Lee and The Drifters etc. Come the mid 60s, sweet soul hits from The Impressions, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding had a huge impact on how rocksteady oozes soul. To me tunes are only a rum nip away from being ska and rocksteady themselves, take Ernie Freeman's 'Live it Up', which could easily be a Tommy McCook skank, or The Sapphires 'Who do you Love' which could be mistaken for some of Coxsone's early Studio One soul. As I was digging into some old delta blues, I stumbled upon King Oliver's 'Riverside Blues' from 1923 and was amazed to find it was a version of one of reggae's founding tunes - Theophilus Beckfords 'Easy Snapping' from 1956 - click! Likewise Sister Rosetta Thorpes 1939 gospel version of the now popular 'This Train' is just stunning. Anyway, enjoy, there are some stonking tunes in here! Part 1 / Part 2
