Steady Rocking w/ Undercover

So I've been listening to a heap of rocksteady of late, always do, it is the ultimate lax music for me - a touch of jazz, a lick of ska and a dose of soul all ooze through the music and it just does it for me. Check this little set, I found you some early r&b hipshakers that Sir Coxsone jammed in the pre-ska days, how the sound progressed though Jazz and Island style Mento that eventually led into bluebeat and ska. Round 66/67' the beat mellowed (ha, stoners) into the slower rocksteady with Duke Reid in his absolute prime and hot on his heels Sir Coxsone Dodd. Rocksteady had a heavy r&b/soul influence first heard in the late 50's soundsystem days and with 7''s returning from US weekly. Other highlights for me include some early Bunny Lee material as he shows his sultry side and of course freshly produced rocksteady re-licks from Peckings, UK. Jah.

Mash Up the Dance w/ Undercover

No were not talking about shit like Queen vs Aerosmith that brings its namesake into disrepute (although I have included a dooope Cher bootleg), we are talking about reggae vs hip hop remixes that never fail to deliver dancehall friendly vibes. The instantly recognisable vocal or beat is flipped and twisted for maximum booty shaking. The first mashups that caught my ear was either the cheeky whitelabel 7" 'No Diggity' over a grinding Real Rock version courtesy of JStar or the Alicia Keys - You Don't Know My Name Reggaefied over a beefed up rocksteady skank! Enjoy this ish, stacked full of bootleg 7", tough to find... UPDATED LINK

Truth & Soul Showcase w/ Undercover

Updated link!

I have been a huge fan of the Brooklyn based funk/soul/latin label Truth & Soul since its inception in 2004. Leon Michels and crew have that raw, rusty feel similar to the Datptone crew gives it a warm groove. There is some exceptional music in here such as Timmy McNealy's Al Green and Marvin Gaye covers and his classic Sagittarius Black (and rap), the funk legend Lee Fields whose recently released album secured his place in music history and house band Expressions/El Michels Affair dope Isaac Hayes and Wu Tang licks. There a few extras like the pre T&S label - Soul Fire that they have re-released and some killer covers and remixes of Amy Whinehouse and Gabriella Climi where T&S take out the pop and insert serious grit. Enjoy.
