Reggae Got Soul w/ Undercover

As the dawn of the 60s approached, Jamaica was awash with the sweet soulful sounds of Motown. Harmony groups such as the The Uniques, The Heptones, The Paragons, The Techniques and The Wailers just took the latest soul and r&b hits from Shirley and Lee, Smokey Robinson, The Impressions, Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone and gave them the Jamaican Rocksteady do-over - it was the pop hit of the day - the original reggae mash-up! What resulted was reggae's enduring love affair (excuse the pun) with soul and in my opinion, some of the greatest music on earth. Styles changed through the early 70s with black independence gaining momentum in popular music and the rise of the funk and disco machine! Part 1 Part 2
