Big Tunes w/ Undercover (June/July 2011)

Here is a fresh installment of 'Big Tunes' from the last month two of new reggae and dancehall releases. Some great stuff dropping of late, heaps of roots riddims sounding good once more. We start off with some Sizzla of the new 'Scriptures' album, a cheeky Sabbo edit of Busy Signal, great stuff from Protoje who I have featured a bit on this one. Sugar and Conroy cover Gregory in a new album, Don Corleon keeps dub alive in a somewhat re-ground=breaking album where is dubs out inna proper style his biggest productions. Another fave off the Luciano album is dropped, Lutan Fyah brings back the love, Skarra Mucci does too, YT rides the Bonafide Riddim, Kerry John on The Crown and newcomer? Kananga on the Sunset Boulevard Riddim. Protoje features again with Don Corleon on production followed by another of his 'dubs'. Buju jumps on the Jah Army and tells the people, not to worry - one strong man there! Roots Garden slips a sneaky Bob Skeng dancehall/stepper nugget out, as does Pupa Jim, Mungo's and Soom T and Mr Williamz. Shabba is riding Curtis Lynch's Mad Organ riddim, Vybz is on the Terry Ganzie Outlaw riddim before Zamunda, Busy Signal, Gappy, Rayvon and Khago ride new dancehall riddims. I finish tings off with a banger off Vybz Kartels new album. Boom!

I think this is what Selector Robin was thinking when he wanted dancing music! It's a simple recipe, combine equal parts reggae with hip hop and you get an instant party banger! You may laugh but anything with Beyonce, Rihanna, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye or Wu Tang is instant gold and as I said before, it will get the girls on the floor! I remember a few years back when the little blank 7" was king, a new one was dropping every week on Fat City - Primetime, Jstar, Heatwave, Rhythm and Booze, Upstate, The Nextmen, Bombist and Niceup ruled the scene and the dancefloors! Be careful with the mashup though, it's gotta be an instantly recognisable vocal spliced perfectly with skanking instrumental, anything mistimed is a dud and absolutely no cheesy Queen or Led Zep mashups allowed. I always drop em quick with versions aplenty to keep the energy inna dance and don't forget to turn it up!

I've always loved the jazzy hip-hop sound, with Blue Note (among others) samples forming the basis of a lot of 90's hip hop. Here is a little set of fresh music dropped recently full of jazz samples, breaks and loopy beats. We have a few on here from the J. Period mix of Wake Up, some of that lush sounding interpretation of Pete Rocks classic 'They Reminisce Over You' from the album I just posted below. Booker T James get in the studio again, not just any studio - the Daptone one! DJ 2-Tone Jones brings us the Wu meets Blue Note stuff. Dj Vadim, Blu and Slum Village start to get nice and loopy before we pick it up with some heavy hip hop vocals and remixes from Aloe Blacc, Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, Dela and Ghostpoet. DJ Jazzy Jeff gives us a Roller Boogie remix of Mayer, Romanowski, The Root Source and Mo Horizons give up some uptempo samba and funk, before we jazz it out again. SwinG!
