This one is about those authentic reggae sounds of now (with a few favourite jams thrown in). Not so much the Jamaican revival renaissance or the genuine Peckings sound, but fresh harmonious soul rocksteady from the UK and the States. Starting with Jr Thomas and the Volcanos (Truth and Soul) where you could close your eyes and think it's straight from a 1968 Beverley's recording. Or the 70/80s analogue roots reggae sound of The Frightners (Mad Decent), The Aggrolites, The Expanders or The Reasonators. Soul singers Liam Bailey, (Truth and Soul) Sharon Jones (Daptone) and Hollie Cook (Mr Bongo) over cracking reggae tunes. To rub-a-dub do-overs from The Dap Kings, Prince Fatty, Ticklah, Beverley All-stars. And the summer sounds of DJ Vadim, Fat Freddys, mashing up the reggae sound for a long time now, seom old, some new. Whatever styles, their vibe all is excellent and their craft is on point.

50 tunes, 43 years,28 labels,3 names, 1 riddim. Burning Spear originated the riddim for his classic He Prayed on Studio One for Coxsone Dodd around 1972 and was released in 73. It must have made waves as Coxsone's right hand man Lee Perry then versioned a riddim with Dillinger called Dub Organiser to entice Coxsone counter with a Dennis Alcapone dubbing the original Burning Spear and releasing it as Joe Frazier.Joe Gibbs came into the rumble to drop a version with Big Youth in Foreman vs Frazer and even Augustus Pablo got in on the action with his own Dub Organiser.Hence the multiple names for this riddim. Versions started to flow with crucial tunes from Winston Jarrett, Prince Hammer, Trinity and Prince Far I before Johnny Osbourne had his massive hit Ice Cream Love in 1980 on Volcano/Greensleeves and of course Scientist's remarkable dubwise version Extra Time 1 off his Wins The Worldcup. What followed was a remarkable metamorphasis of the riddim, sometimes a likkle bit of Joe Frazier, sometimes a likkle bit ofDub Organiser, and sometimes a likkle bit ofHe Prayed but all with that distinctive dum, dum...dum, dum, dum sample. Come the mid 80s and 90s the digital tempo increased with tunes dropping on Sinbad, Hi Power, Prince Jammys and Roofman International and Digital B labels. Come the early 2000s and Massive B and Black Arrow relick it inna digital roots style before Sinead and Sly and Robbie get their hands on it (it's OK!) and recently Phenomenon by Kabaka and Digital B, nearly 20years after Boobby Konders first touched it and 43 years after Burning Spear laid down his first verses for Coxsone. Thanks to Twice for kicking this one off and hooking us all with the goods. Part 1.Part 2.
The biz that's in my head at the moment, hope it's in yours soon. Crucial roots and rubadub, dub and steppers, wild b sides and unreleased dubs and rare deejay classics for your perusal. Appreciating Leroy Brown of late, those Colour Barrier dubs are heavy! Wheeellll up!

Forming in the early 60s and enjoying early success for Coxsone and latterly Leslie Kong and Sonia Pottinger where the sensational Gaylads. Up there with, if not the best vocal trios of the ska and rocksteady era. Reggae will never die. With the amount of samples and riddims to rework it will keep on trucking. It used to be ska, rocksteady and roots getting the rework but now 80s roots rub a dub and digital dancehall getting the treatment of late. They are even sampling sampled samples. Go figure.

Impeccable music here. No fuss, no fanfare. Freddie is one of my favourite foundation vocalists. He is so smooth yet gravelly from rocksteady to lovers to heavy as lead roots. He always voiced the heaviest riddims and his albums are full of stepping cuts with tuff Tubby dubs. A few recuts of his classics inna tempo change too, interesting to listen to side by side.

Back by popular demand is The Spy Who Killed Me! I'm a huge fan of the spy and espionage genre be it a movie, book or ska! And unlikely as it was, Jamaica was a common setting for many a Bond movie. So you can see the connection with reggae with no shortage of Bond homages and theme covers. Some just have the mystical thriller vibe, others are uptown and you could imagine James Bond sipping Martini's, tuning girls poolside at The Jamaican Hilton. The tunes are killer, Bond would be proud.

I've gone off the whole Euro reggae sound of late. The riddims and vocals just have that 'Euro digital roots dancehall sound' that well just sounds a bit tired (soz)...so it's all about the Jamaican sound for me! This was gonna start off as a 'Three the Hardway' type mix, but I just kept adding nuff top JA (and US) artists to the combo until it got a bit silly. The reggae revival is bubbling long nicely at the moment...yes indeedy. I have a dream. A dream where groups in the vein of The Heptones, The Wailing Souls and The Gaylads come around again. Could you imagine these guys below singing together? Bliss.

Here we are - the biggest tunes of 2014 according to I. Bold are my top picks, the cream. Who Knows is pretty much THE anthem for 2014 - leading rasta revivalists unite inna feel good vibe - trade winds, sunshine, rivers and trees, you get the idea. Diamond Sox featuring Notis and Iba Mahr (with Tarrus on the remix) comes like a breath of fresh air in 2014. Nothing new with a killer 80s inspired digital riddim but the excitement I get when listening to this tune is electric. So those take the podium for me. What are yours? Top 5 artists of the Year for me would have to be Chronixx, Protoje, Jesse Royal, Iba Mahr and Tarrus Riley. Nearly 75 tracks, enjoy!

Mean girl Twice Nice hooked us up some killer Mean Girl/I Need a Roof licks spanning an amazing 40 years. From Larry Marshall's classic lick and hook on Studio One in 1968 to Pavlove, Prince Far-I and Little Joe, to a stepping Channel One version with Mighty Diamond next milestone I Need a Roof. Bunny Lee alway got in on the action this time with a killer soul vocal from Jackie Edwards, some big Joe Gibbs productions went down with Trinity and Junior Byles, Augustus and Hugh Mundell murdered the riddim on Rockers, then of course it came back to Studio One come Sugar Minott. The eighties treated it kindly with some killer early rubadub dancehall at Midnight Rock. The Revolutionaries had not given way to the Casio just yet, but when it did it kept its integrity and bubbled along nice time thanks to Jammys and Black Solidarity. The nineties riddim stayed fat and militant with Xterminator voicing crucial cuts with Sizzla and Capleton and Cocoa Tea. Come '07 we had Ray Darwin scoring a huge hit for Tads and in '08 Prince Fatty and longtime legend Little Roy rub up the dance nice time - 40 years on. Give Thanks Twice!

Studio One, the humble little Jamaican studio that defined a genre had some great instrumental versions on the b sides of their 7"s including early ska and rocksteady numbers, as well as dubbed out horn and percussion versions. So as a precursor to a forthcoming dub post, we have some classic Studio One versions, or dubs as they became known. Wheel up!
