Swell Headed Riddim w/ Twice Nice and Undercover

Big Big Ups to long-time follower Twice Nice for this fine Swell Headed riddim rundown! Upon hearing the latest Kabaka tune, Twice emailed me some big tunes pon the riddim resulting in said post! We start with the ital Burning Spear original, followed by the Pablove Black instrumental classic, both from Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. A trend we will no doubt notice. The Revolutionaries picked up the riddim in 1976 and laid down a typically heavy militant roots version at Channel One while Deejays U Roy and Prince Far saw a good thing going and jumped on to voice. Rod Taylor and Black Solidarity blazed a steppers classic while Freddie McGregor recorded some prime 80s rub-a-dub on the Spiderman label. Come 1996 and the Dancehall era and we have Everton Blender flying the roots flag high and gives us nuff vibes. European crew Reggae On Top takes it inna millenium roots digital steppers territory with a big soundsystem dub to follow. And 42 years later we have the leading lights of Jamaican reggae Chronixx and Kabaka bring it back inna Channel One style. Bless. Riddim!

Alrighty, some huuuge tunes starting to drop again - reggae is vibing on the vintage right now. Tarrus has dropped an amazing album teaming up with Dean Fraser as they mix big solid riddims with sweet lovers licks - all killer, no filler on that one - much in the same vein as the recent Shaggy and Bitty albums. Randy Valentine is one of my favorite vocalists right now and he's dropped some maad vintage styles to follow up on his No1 Station hit on Bring Back the Love. Addis Pablo is another youth hitting his straps and releasing his debut full length In My Fathers House - a nod towards his pa. A few solid melodic dub sonic booms in there. Slim Smith w/ Undercover

Where do you start? Well he was first ever great Jamaican rocksteady 'singer'. With silky smooth vocals he had sublime a solo career heralding in the 'soul and rocksteady sound' with numerous hits for Coxonne @Studio One after being the lead vocalist in The Techniques @Duke Reid until '65 and latterly The Uniques @Bunny Lee and @TheObserver up til his tragic and troubled death in '73. A Blend of Mashups w/ Undercover

I was thinking the other day how I ain't heard a good mash-up in a while. Over our ways it was all the rage and the staple of any good DJ was the party starting reggae 7" bootlegs from the likes of Jstar, Heatwave, Interstate and Primetime. But they soon became few and far between (the good ones anyway), I guess they just got left behind as reggae from JA turned on and dancehall became the go-to party music. Jump forward 3-4 years and we still have vocals from Rihanna and MIA, we still have The Heatwave, Soulforce and Jstar, but the rocksteady and reggae riddims have been left behind and the dial has just been turned up a fair few notches with bangin' dancehall riddims straight inna daggering Major Lazer vibe. Well and truly Mashed Up! For old times sake, I've included some of my all time favourite blends in this mix - Tupac and Alton will never get old ya' hear! Mash it up!

Reggae Got Soul w/ Undercover

As the dawn of the 60s approached, Jamaica was awash with the sweet soulful sounds of Motown. Harmony groups such as the The Uniques, The Heptones, The Paragons, The Techniques and The Wailers just took the latest soul and r&b hits from Shirley and Lee, Smokey Robinson, The Impressions, Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone and gave them the Jamaican Rocksteady do-over - it was the pop hit of the day - the original reggae mash-up! What resulted was reggae's enduring love affair (excuse the pun) with soul and in my opinion, some of the greatest music on earth. Styles changed through the early 70s with black independence gaining momentum in popular music and the rise of the funk and disco machine! Part 1 Part 2

I'm a Junglist w/ Undercover

OK, so after weeks of internet dramas I'm back with the much requested fresh jungle vibes! I'm no hardcore junglist, but I do know what I like and I like these bangers alot! First up we have my old mate Blak Twang teaming up with...drumroll please...Congo Natty! Yes I, the man is back on production and is dropping a new album soon I believe. Check his single UK Allstars also, killer! Other big tingz are the Di Genius and Liondub combo relicking The Moving riddim into a jungle styley! Thank Piet for that one! Other big samples include bits from Collie Buddz, Johnny Osbourne, Shabba and JC Lodge, Solo, YT, Marcus Visionary, Benny Page and Run Tingz Crew. It's more on the D&B tip, but check Mucky Weekend, a sloppy, slutty slammer!!! Airhorn!
